In 1976, in the city of Hsinchu City, Taiwan, Multitech was founded. The founders were Stan Shih, Carolyn Yeh (his wife), and five others. With 11 employees, the company distributed electronic parts and served as a consultant in the use of microprocessors. Quite far off from how Acer is known today.
After a series of reorganization, Multitech joined the emerging IBM PC compatible market. With their success into the venture, the company became a significant PC manufacturer. In 1987, Multitech was renamed to Acer.
Throughout the years, Acer acquired and developed different technologies. While the company is commonly known as a manufacturer of computers and peripherals, Acer is generally a hardware and electronics corporation.
